Barcelona midfielder Gavi is uncertain for Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Benfica, manager Hansi Flick has confirmed.
The 20-year-old, who featured in Barcelona’s thrilling 5-4 win over Benfica in January, has been on the bench for the club’s last two La Liga matches. However, he missed a recent training session due to illness.
“We will see. Yesterday, he did not train because he wasn’t feeling well. He will visit the doctor again, and we have to wait,” Flick said on Tuesday.
Gavi has made 24 appearances this season, contributing two goals and three assists since returning from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
“Gavi is coming back from a serious injury, so we have to manage his workload carefully, especially with matches every three to four days,” Flick added.
“He is versatile, not just limited to the No. 10 role, and is excellent on the ball. Dani Olmo also thrives in that position—he scores goals and creates chances.”
Barcelona will assess Gavi’s condition ahead of the crucial knockout tie as they look to gain an advantage in Lisbon.
