The Ekiti State Government, under the leadership of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, has approved N2,002,062,725.83 for the construction of a standard synthetic turf football pitch and the comprehensive renovation of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti. This initiative is part of the administration’s strategic vision to leverage sports development as a tool for talent discovery, youth empowerment, and wealth creation, while elevating the state’s sporting infrastructure to global standards.
The renovation project aims to transform the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium into a world-class facility, aligning with the administration’s goal of using sports to combat poverty, unemployment, and crime. Key upgrades include the construction of a synthetic turf football pitch, the renovation of the administrative block for improved staff working conditions, and the refurbishment of athletics tracks, seating terraces, spectator stands with canopies, and the VIP stand. Additional enhancements involve the installation of pitch accessories, the renovation of existing offices, and the erection of perimeter fencing around the stadium.
The contract, awarded to United Logistics Construzione Soluzione Limited through a Direct Procurement method, is expected to be completed within three months. The same company is also tasked with handling the pitch renovation, ensuring continuity and efficiency in the project’s execution.
Addressing public speculation, a state official clarified, “There has been a misconception that the government is spending N7 billion on the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium renovation. The total approved amount for all listed works—including the administrative building, synthetic football pitch, and tartan tracks—is N2,002,062,725.83.”
Dr. (Mrs.) Olusola Osetoba, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, also expressed her appreciation for Governor Biodun Oyebanji. She commended him for achieving what many sports-loving Ekiti indigenes have long dreamed of.
This ambitious investment reflects the administration’s commitment to turning sports into a sustainable career path for Ekiti youths. By fostering an enabling environment, the government aims to nurture talent, provide opportunities for participation, and position the state as a hub for competitive sporting events.
